Short History

1024 E Indiana Ave has hosted many over the years as Elva’s Fiesta Club and originally the William Penn Fraternity home and office. The city purchased the building in March of 2025 to be the new Rum Village community center. This six-year effort has been supported by the Rum Village Neighborhood Association and the Sixth District Common Councilmember Sheila Niezgodski. As well as the neighborhood plan that was adopted in 2022, calling for a community center and the creation of a new attractive node at Prairie Ave and Indiana Ave.

The community center will be run in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of St Joseph County, running programs once the center is open. The goal of this space is to provide all day use opportunities, not solely afterschool programs.

Let your voice be heard at the Community Listening Session as to what should be in the new community center!

  • Rum Village is getting a new community center with the Boys & Girls Club as the primary partner! The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northern Indiana Corridor serve school-aged children from Kindergarten through age 18 (K–18), offering Before Care, After School, and Summer Programs to this community. The center is meant to serve a variety of community needs, with the additional programing currently undecided. This survey gives the community a chance to let their values and priorities be heard! These questions were the same that were at the Listening Session June 15th.
