What is the Southhold Preservation Award?

The Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County presents Southhold Preservation Awards, recognizing outstanding preservation and restoration in five categories. Southhold Awards are a tribute to the former Southhold Restorations, Inc. who existed from 1973-1997, leaving a grant to the Historic Preservation Commission to continue these awards.

What are the award criteria?

To be considered for Southhold Awards, buildings must be at least 50 years old, and located in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Additionally, the current owner of the building must be the person responsible for the work, which must have been completed within the last three years.

What are the different categories of the Southhold Preservation Award?

  • Historic Preservation Award - the building or site has been maintained in a manner intended to protect its historical and architectural integrity. Little “restoration” work would be necessary if the building changed hands.
    1. Commercial
    2. Residential
  • Historic Restoration Award - the building or site has undergone major work to bring it back to its architectural integrity.
    1. Commercial
    2. Residential
  • Adaptive Reuse - the use of the building has been changed without compromising the architectural or historical integrity. Usually, the buildings in this category have been endangered and the new use has saved them.
