Project Purpose

The City of South Bend will be making streetscape improvements to LaSalle Avenue to encourage investment, promote safety, calm traffic, and expand the active transportation network.

Project Scope

Streetscape enhancements will be made to LaSalle Avenue between the St. Joseph River and Eddy Street. The planned scope is as follows:

St. Joseph River to Hill Street (Primary Project Area)

  • Replacement of curbs, sidewalks, driveway approaches, and street paving
  • Addition of on-street parking
  • Raised intersections with corner pedestrian safety bumpouts
  • Trail crossings with median refuges
  • Protected bike lanes
  • Pedestrian-scale ornamental lighting
  • Street trees

Hill Street to Eddy Street (Secondary Project Area)

  • Protected bike lanes west of Notre Dame Avenue
  • Street paving
  • Revisions to lane striping

Project Schedule

Construction is anticipated to begin June 12, 2023. Major work was completed by early December. Work on traffic signals, street lighting, sidewalk pavers, permanent street striping, and landscaping is to be completed by April 26, 2024.

Property Access

LaSalle Avenue will be limited to westbound traffic during portions of the project. To the greatest practical degree, access to properties will be maintained throughout the project. Use of driveway approaches will be restricted during removal, installation, and the curing period after installation. Every effort will be made to minimize interruption to property access for residents, customers, employees, and deliveries.
