Project Purpose
As part of its implementation of the Rum Village Neighborhood Plan, the City of South Bend will be making streetscape improvements to Ewing Avenue to promote safety, calm traffic, and expand the active transportation network. The project will better connect the neighborhood and Walker Field to Rum Village Park.

Streetscape enhancements will be made to Ewing Avenue between Gertrude Street and Webster Street. The planned scope is as follows:
Gertrude Street to Walnut Street
Targeted replacement of sidewalks on the north side of street
Addition of shared-use path on the south side of street
Walnut Street to Webster Street
Replacement of curbs (realigned on the south side to narrow street)
Installation of raised intersections or crossings with pedestrian safety bumpouts at Walnut Street, Walker Field shelter house, and Webster Street
Street repaving
Addition of street trees and shared-use path on the south side of street
New entrance into Rum Village Park for people on foot and bicycle
Project Schedule
Construction is tentatively anticipated for late 2024 to summer 2025.
Property Access
The portions of Ewing Avenue adjacent to Walker Field will close during parts of construction, but to the degree possible, access to properties will be maintained throughout the project. Every effort will be made to minimize interruption to property access for residents and deliveries.
