Information Session

June 23rd & 24th

6:00pm-8:00pm

Presentation at 6:00pm

NNN Community Center

1013 Portage Ave

South Bend, IN

Short History

Once a sign of South Bend’s bustling industry, the former Drewrys Brewery site had sat vacant for decades. The site became a blight on the entire northwest side of South Bend after years of neglect and deterioration under previous private owners. In 2023, the EPA removed over two tons of asbestos and 13,000 tons of construction waste and debris and IDEM removed six underground storage tanks to stabilize the site and protect the neighborhood’s safety.
Since acquiring the site via tax sale in 2022, the City of South Bend has worked to remove the blight and demolish all structures on site. In 2025, the City acquired the former Portage Elwood shopping plaza and Portage Sunoco station and recently completed the demolition of both sites. Totaling almost 24 acres, the combined project site has the potential to transform a blighted and underutilized area into a new, lively neighborhood.
Attend an information session on June 23 or 24 to learn more about the City’s vision for the former Drewrys Brewery, shopping plaza, and Muessel Grove Park as well as provide input on the project.
