Project Purpose

The City of South Bend will be making streetscape improvements to the Campeau Street-Notre Dame Avenue-South Bend Avenue-Frances Street area to promote safety, calm traffic, reduce unnecessary pavement, expand the shared-use path network, and encourage investment.

Project Scope

Planned work includes the following:

  • Installation of a raised, 4-way stop intersection at Notre Dame Avenue and South Bend Avenue,
  • The realignment of curbs along Campeau Street,
  • Addition of a shared-use path along Campeau Street and South Bend Avenue,
  • Replacement of curb, sidewalk, and driveway approaches,
  • Street paving,
  • Street trees and sod, and
  • Street lighting upgrades.

Project Schedule

Construction started in mid-March 2023, with the major work expected to take about 4-5 months to complete.

During construction, there will be two phases of street closures:

Phase 1: The intersection at Campeau and Frances streets will be closed from March 13 to mid-May, weather permitting. Frances Street and South Bend Avenue, north of Campeau Street, will also close to through traffic during this time frame.

Phase 2: The intersection of Campeau Street/South Bend Avenue and Notre Dame Avenue will be closed mid-May to mid-July. (Exact dates of the closures will be announced at a later date.)

Property Access

The Notre Dame Avenue-South Bend Avenue intersection will close during construction, but to the degree possible, access to properties will be maintained throughout the project. Use of driveway approaches will be restricted during removal, installation, and the curing period after installation. Every effort will be made to minimize interruption to property access for residents and deliveries.
